Coding Course (After School Hours)
The Academy of Code has approached the school with a view to setting up a computer Coding class dedicated to St Paul’s College students from this coming September. For students starting ‘Transition Year’ in September 2017 this may be of particular interest, as the leaving cert Computer Science curriculum is set to be launched in time for those sitting the 2020 Leaving Certificate exams. For students contemplating the Junior Cycle Short Course in computer Coding these classes will be equally of interest.
The Academy of Code are a group of TechEd specialists who deliver a range of Computer Coding classes to schools throughout Dublin both during and after the school day. They have worked in ST Paul’s College for the past number of years delivering evening and weekend classes. Their tutors have a wealth of experience in teaching computer coding and are drawn from academia and the tech industry, and in some cases both. The Academy of Code has engaged with the Department of Education and Skills, and the NCCA and operates in line with the Government’s ‘Digital Strategy for Schools’ initiative. Depending on demand they propose to offer Computer Coding classes to the students of St Pauls College Sybil Hill, from this September.
From their description of the course: “Classes will be taught initially through Scratch if appropriate, or through a Java based framework called Processing. This is an ideal starting place for students interested in computer coding, as it provides a gentle introductory environment coupled with industry standard structure and syntax, and provides almost infinite room for students to grow within The Academy of Code’s curriculum. More detail of some of the course content can be seen at theacademyofcode.com/course-content”.
Classes will take place in the school’s computer rooms and will most likely run for 90 minutes. A time slot and specific day will be determined at a later stage having consideration to student interest and availability. Pricing for the first term (to run from September through to Christmas) will be approximately €150 per student. Additional queries should be directed to [email protected] or to Tom Maher at 087-9019062.
Please note that running this course will require a minimum level of interest from the school community, so please take the time to register your interest.
