The Transition Year is a one-year programme, which come immediately after the completion of the Junior Certificate.

Every student is encouraged to do Transitiion Year In St. Paul's College.

 

The Aims of the programme are:

  • Education for maturity  with the emphasis on personal development including social awareness and increased social competence.
  • The promotion of general, technical and academic skills with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and self-directing learning.
  • Education through experience of adult and working life as a basis for personal development and maturity.

The Objectives of the Programme are:

  • To provide a good academic basis for the beginning the Senior Cycle Course.
  • To develope aspects of the curriculum which tend not to be catered for in other Courses.
  • To develope teamwork though task orientated projects.
  • To develope links between school and the wider community.
  • To encourage students to become responsible for their owndevelopment.
  • To introduce students to a wide range of cultural activities and sporting activities.
  • To prepare students to become responsible members of society.

A charge is required to facilitate the wide range of activites in which students are involved during the year.

The College values the Transition year programme and emphatically recomments that all students  participate in the programme. A limited number of students may in certain circumstances be permitted to transfer directly from Junior Certificate Cycle to Leaving Certficate Cycle.

An information meeting, concerning Transition Year is usually held for third years parnets during the month of March. Applications for transfer must be made in writing to the Principal to arrive not later that 10 school days after the meeting .

A commitee consisting of the Principal, Deputy Principal, Career Guidance Teacher, Learning Support Teacher and Year Head will examine each application using the criteria in operation at the time. The committee will then make a recommendation to the Board.

Final decision to grant such permission resides with the Board of Management.

The Board may decide not allow students to participate in Transition Year and instuct that the student move directly from 3rd to 5th year.
