Applied Maths

Applied Mathematics is offered to Leaving Certificate students in St Paul’s College.

It is a two-year programme and is available for study at both higher and ordinary levels. Classes take place during Lunch Break.

At higher level, students study eight topics (linear motion, relative velocity, projectiles, Newton’s laws and connected particles, impacts and collisions, circular and simple harmonic motion, moments of inertia and differential equations), answering six questions in their Leaving Certificate exam. The course is concise and leaves time for plenty of revision in 6th Year. The exam is also clearly structured and provides students with choice and some level of predictability.

At ordinary level, students study seven topics (simple harmonic motion, moments of inertia and differential equations are not studied but statics is), answering six questions in their Leaving Certificate exam. A clear exam structure provides students with choice and predictability.

Students who have obtained an A or high B grade at higher level in Maths in their junior cycle and Transition Year studies and who have a keen interest in using Maths to solve practical problems are ideal candidates for Applied Maths. The course can be enjoyable and rewarding and can be a useful stepping stone for students interested in pursuing a third level course in subjects such as engineering, financial mathematics and the natural and social sciences.
